problems on startup....

Installing on Dell, IBM, Compaq and other generic x86 hardware

problems on startup....

Postby goofyp on Mon Oct 05, 2009 12:51 am

"Could not look up internet address pc (pc is my login).
This will prevent Xfce from operating correctly.
It may be possible to correctthe problem by adding
pc to the file/etc/hosts on your system"

Continue anyway/Try again.

How do I fix this? I click Try again, but nothing happens.
Continue anyway, loads up an orange screen without any icons.
So I don't understand what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,
I'm quite a newbie to Linux so there will be no much help I can provide actually. As far as what I have been able to understand it is something that has to do with the files in /etc/hosts or in /etc/resolv.conf. The first should identify your machine within a network (so the file should be edited adding a line which should be something like 127.0.1.1 pc .
If this does not work try to verify the resolv.conf which manages the DNS settings. To verify the files You may try to start the system in recovery mode or in case use the Live CD mode to access the partition hosting the system.

More info can be found @ http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ss-222777/

Hope this helps,
Antonio

Thanks Antonio!
I tried the live cd but it wouldn't give permissions to alter any of the files :(
I also was at loss to find the file to edit. I wish that in the sessions there would be
a recovery mode.

Thanks for the help anyways

Hello,
Have you tried accessing the files using the terminal? You should first be able to mount the partition in which the OS is installed (command: sudo mount /dev/your_partition) and then open the file (using a command like sudo nano /etc/hosts). That should work.

Regards,
Antonio
