NEWBIE:"PRE"INSTALL DUAL BOOT PC/OS WITH OTHER LINUX DISTRO

Postby grpcos on Fri Jul 24, 2009 3:20 am

I am not a linux nor grub expert I admit!! (especially with command line )
I ve'recently came across pc/os and I was charmed
I decided to install it as a secondary linux distro on my pc(my pc has not WIN at all )
installation seemed to run smoothly BUT there was not an option to add a "line" in an already existing grub
My other distro's grub editor has option to add other distros etc BUT I DONT KNOW what parameters/option i should add
of cource an "easy" way could be to install it alone but that would spoil my already installed distro
IS THERE A WAY one can find the GRUB installation parameters for PCOS??
thank you for your time!

Hello,
I am newbie to Linux but as far as I know it is sufficient that you install PC-os on a different partition than the one containini the other distro (of course following the 7 step install procedure). The configuration of GRUB should be done automatically (at least it worked in my case; I have currently Pc-os and Ubuntu 9.04 installed on my desktop) and on boot it should show the two options.

A list of the distros which may be booted (with different kernels, if this has been updated by time) can found on /boot/grub/menu.lst

Hope this helps,
Antonio

Well mmm I didnt reall understand how ican make that you describe:
I'm running PC/OS 2009v2a livecd
I cant locate where in the intaller exists an option for existing GRUB
I can only select newGRUB either on MBR or partition
how then can incorporate my existing GRUB in THE MBR???

Hel

I assume you have the two distros installed on different partions of your HD. To be sure runa pc-os live CD, open a terminal and type
sudo fdisk-l

This will display the existing partitions of your HD and the relevant filesystem used.
Namely the local Hd is defined as sda (with sda1, sda2, ... being the different partitions existing on the HD, in some cases it should be identified as sda).

on same therminal type
sudo grub-install /dev/sda

Grub-install should be able to fix grub installation thus to allow you to choose which partition to boot.
More info on
http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual ... stall.html

To keep it more simple you could reinstall pc-os on the same partition you have used on first pc-os install (of course, backup important/personal data before doing so), GRUB will be reinstalled automatically on MBR during the 7 step install process, so when you restart the machine you will be asked which system will have to be booted.
Currently I have two machines with dual-boot (one win-pcos and one ubuntu-pcos) and this has worked ok for me.

Hope this helps, in case post your feedback here and I will try to provide further support (don't expect much, I discovered GNU/Linux only some months ago and I have plenty to learn...):D

Regards,
Antonio
