pre install motherboard architecture problems

Postby charles on Mon Mar 02, 2009 7:44 am

Hi all - new to PC/OS
pc-2009v2opendesktop.iso
I downloaded, burnt discs and set out with enthusiasm - and kept crashing during the boot process;
CD would stop dead and sit in the grub directory. typing something in like boot <enter> would simply
bring up the complaint, 'can't execute without first loading kernel' - reburnt the cd's thinking I'd done
something stupid - only to happen again. Loaded an image from a different site - same outcome
The box I was using is a BTX mb , an early dual core chip (the old pentium D - intel 830) with plenty of
everything on the system. So shifted the disc down the desk to my other, a core2 on an ATX mb, otherwise
similarly furnished. It ran perfectly
Linux has always run for me faultlessly on both boxes
Can anybody tell me any reason why PC/OS would refuse to boot on a BTX machine ????

many thanks
charles

I have a BTX based machine and I dont have any problems with PC/OS booting on that machine. The fact that it does boot on the other shows a machine problem not an ISO problem. What peripheals do you have on there. Something may be conflicting. I have had this problem sometimes if I have a USB drive or some other external media hooked up.

thanks your interest, thoughts + reply
Yes - I would agree with you - but I seem to be seeing contrary signs and indications. After reading your
note, in turn, I put through on the BTX, live or install copies of Ubuntu 8.10, Suse 11, Debian Lenny and
umm - something called Foresight 2.1.0 - and Partmagic - - they all got going quite happily.
The set up is quite vanilla - mb is Intel, i830 proc, optical and mag drives are sata connected, 2Gb of ram
and onboard peripherals including graphics - no outboard drives
Looking at that, I was just wondering if the integrated graphics might be giving PC/OS the indigestion ?? (falling over at that early stage)??) - Bios looks ok to me

Again, thanks for your thoughts

I just went through the install of PC/OS 2009v2 and I have no problems whatsoever with mine. Its weird. I dont think the integrated graphics can be the problem as the onboard Intel chips are common in laptops. This problem is just one of those weird ones.
