Create a folder named Pictures in your home directory and put the pictures you want in it. Thats the default folder that gnome-screensaver looks for.

Yes, I have a picture folder in my home folder and when I preview the screensaver it shows the pics in the folder but when its time to display them to the desktop all I get is a blank screen.

That particular screensaver require OpenGL hence an accelerated graphics card, do you have that?

EDIT: This seems to be a known issue with gnome-screensaver. the only workaround I have seen on the issue is to installo xscreensaver from Synaptic. I will probably replace gnome-screensaver in 2009.

Another option I have found is the f-spot utility, install it via synaptic and go to screensavers and shoose f-spot screensaver and choose your photos

Edit the file /usr/share/applications/screensavers/Picture Folders.desktop and add the "location" in the line:
Exec=slideshow --location=Pictures at the bottom of the file

You have to sudo to change it
