Oh the frustrations.

Room to talk about anything

Oh the frustrations.

I am new to Linux, although I have been interested in it for some time. PC-OS is my first successful install on a desktop PC, I am still hopeful with my Powerbook G3.
I am surprised at the many flavours of Linux and I guess that will partly explain the difficulties in using this OS.
Like many people I not a big fan of MS but feel the there is little in the way of alternatives, Linux being full of promise and disapointments.
My quest at the moment is to use my printer, well all in one really, a Canon Stylus MP800, but as finding a driver is proving difficult just a HP Deskjet 930c driver would be most welcome.
I am a retired electronidcs technician and find the need to exercise my grey matter (use it or loose it) and for this purpose Linux certainly fits the bill.
Any tips on printer drivers would be greatfully recieved.

Dai the searching.

once my wife and i learned how to burn an iso to a working disk, we went nuts and put many linux distros on disk. later it occured to me that printing with linux would be a huge plus, so i installed every possible distro and checked the package manager for drivers for her "brother". there is two distros that actually have drivers for her printer. PCOS and crunchbang. all other distros either had installation problems or didn't have the drivers. you're probably going to have to do the same thing i did to get your printer operating with linux.

You can find instructions for installing the HP DeskJet 930C on www.linuxprinting.org; here's the specific page:

http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_print ... skJet_930C

The same site doesn't list a driver for the Canon MP800, but does have one for the MP970, which might be backwards-compatible.
