Hi,

I just installed PC/OS linux in my laptop using live USB.

To answer your first question, yes you can create a live CD/DVD and boot from them. In windows XP use some ISO burner like Active@ or MagicISO and burn the Distro to the CD/DVD. In the BIOS make sure the system will check CD/DVD first before the hard disk.

To create live USB use the software 'UNetbootin' and select Ubuntu as the distro. Once the ISO file is written to the USB drive you can boot from the USB. Again make sure your system is bootable from USB, change the boot order in BIOS.

I have not tried writing changes to the USB. I guess you can try 'Persistence' option, check the pendrivelinux for tutorial in this regard. Not sure what you want with 'Firewall ' and 'Antivirus' for linux??
