connect to the internet

Postby kira on Sat May 23, 2009 6:26 pm

I have recently switched from Mac OS, on a genuine intel-iMac, to Ubuntu and like it, but my complaints about it is that is does not come with openoffice 3 or come with the restricted codecs installed or Thunderbird. As a result, I looked into this distribution and like how it comes with the codecs, Java, OOo 3, ndiswrapper, and Thunderbird, but this is where my problem starts with this distribution. I still need my printed out sheet, but I can get Internet working correctly in Ubuntu 8.04; however, I can't get the internet working on PC/OS. How would I connect to the internet in PC/OS? I think I have the 2009 version of PC/OS, but don't remember if it was opendesktop or workstation.

Hello Kira,

to verify which version of PC-Os you have just boot in LIVE CD mode and you will see which version is on Cd. Otherwise when computer is already running insert PC-OS cd and look at the readme.diskdefines file. It will tell which version of PC-OS you have on CD.
Currently I have PC-OSv2 opendesktop installed and running on all my three machines. I like this distro for your very same reasons. Being based on Ubuntu 8.04 everything which was running under Ubuntu should be running as well on PC-OS. I connect the the Internet via wireless network and this is recognised automatically by the system.
If you still find trouble the Ubuntu forums (as well as the relevant documentation on the official site) may provide clues to your problem.

Regards,
Antonio

According to the files, I have openDesktop. Thanks for telling me how to find that.

The directions I follow are at this location.

Yes, this is for an old version of Ubuntu, but it worked in version 8.04. When I followed these directions, I still could not connect to the internet using PC-OS. I've got some DVD rips, so I can't attempt anything right now.

Hello Kira,

For ubuntu 8.04 the documentation about the internet connection is @ https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/internet/C/connect.html
Generally connection stup is made via Network manager applet (on Pc-Os is the little icon with signal strength on bottom taskbar on the right. I have a wireless connection so all I do is just left click on the icon and tick the relevant network I wish to connect to. Normally a WPA passphrase is required.
More info can be found on Ubuntu documentation @ https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/internet/C ... -enable-nm

Hope this helps,
Antonio

Thanks for the second welcoming. Well, I looked at it and things were not much different between the 8.04 documentation and the version of documentation I was using. I also tried looking up internet access for Xubuntu, which is the variant of Ubuntu that PC/OS is based off of. Are there really any extra steps for PC/OS? Installing the driver through ndiswrapper and filling in my network information was not enough at that time. Well, I need to test my DVD rips and get them on the hard drive where my iTunes library is before I do anything.

Hello Kira,

I guess you connect the internet via DSL. Are you using a wired or a wireless connection? Connect via USB modem or via router? If the newtork manager is not showing any available network I guess some drivers are nor currently installed. On Pc-OS go to Applications-System-hardware drivers and see if the system has found proprietary drivers which need to be enabled. If this is the case just enable the connection interface you have (for instance, my laptop has a Broadcom wireless proprietary driver. At first install the system asked me to enable the driver; i did and after rebooting the wireless network was visible from the network manager). Usually the wired interface is detected as eth0 (assuming you connect via ethernet port), the wireless one is usually named Wlan0.

Make a check and post here; I will try to provide some help (actually I am quite a newbie to Linux; I have started using it only some months ago but really I have no reason now to get back to Windows :D ).

Regards,
Antonio

Alright. I finally got a chance to test it out and I'm surprised about how easy this was. I'm not sure how different it was, but back on Ubuntu, I had to install the drivers manually, hence the reason I have a copy of bcmwl5 drivers. However, I went to the place that Antonio told me about and though I was doubtful it would work (Ubuntu listed the drivers as available, but I need the Internet to get them), I installed the broadcom drivers without needing to use my copy of the drivers on the USB and have successfully connected to the Internet. I'm using the Live CD right now, so I'll test some before replacing Ubuntu with this. Yes, I use DSL and it is wireless.

Hello Kira,

Glad to see your connection is working! Enjoy this distro. For people like me, coming from a Win environment this worked like a charm.
Couple of tips:

-Application-system-software sources: on third party software tab I have unticked most part of the option since a message popped up telling me there was no public key available for accessing the repository. Since it was of no particular importance to me I preferrred to have have those repositories removed (they can restored at any time, if you wish, and of course add many more).
-Exaile: for the time being i suggest you to go to the official site and follow the instruction if you wish yo upgrade the existing version.

All the rest for me worked exactly out of the box and needed no further adjustment.
Regards,
Antonio

P.S.: Believe it or not, this distro's working smoothly even on a Pentium III machine (my third and older equipment, was previously supporting Win98).

Yeah, it's nice. Well, you are kind of taking it off topic now, so better stop now. So far, I have not experienced anything that Ubuntu has not thrown at me. I'm just going to stick with VLC and iTunes through Virtualbox, since I have an ipod touch.
